Working with Tandberg Data Terminals.
I started working for Siemens Data AB in Stockholm in November 1983. Siemes Data AB was general importer of Tandberg in Sweden, at that time also Tandberg Data A/S was owned by Siemens AG in Germany. I worked with onsite customer support for the first half year or so, then I started in the Sales department in 1984. My department only worked with Tandberg Data products.
In the Sales department I worked with support and also development of customer modifications on various TDV 22XX models. We were just two persons in the sales department working with the customer modifications, and we developed in total more than 30 customer specific modifications, and we earned a lot on it. I was also involved in the development of the TDV 2243, later TDV 2243 S. Me and my collegue Kent Persson did the development of this model. This was a model based on the TDV 2230 VT 100 (later VT 220), but with all places on the keyboard normally with cover plates filled with key switches. The function keys was double engraved, with DEC VT 100/220 engraved in black, and IBM 3270 function keys in green on the edge of the keytop. One key engraved DEC/IBM sent a CSI sequence which in the gateway the terminal was connected to switched the terminal between DEC and IBM computers. So the TDV 2243 replaced two terminals with one. We sold more than 30 000 TDV 2243 / TDV 2243 S to Volvo and ASEA (now ABB) in Sweden. The TDV 2243 was developed as a customer modification in close cooperation with Volvo and ASEA and the keys were in the beginning engraved by a local company in Stockholm. Later on since it sold so well it was manufactured by Tandberg Data A/S in Oslo complete with the custom keys engraved by whoever engraved keys in Norway. I think it was possible to order in two different versions, TDV 2243/1 and TDV 2243/2, with a small difference in the keyboard layout because Volvo and ASEA had different requirements. The version could as far as I remember be set in one of the menues.
I ported the TDV 2243 to TDV 1200 Ruby, but don't remember if I did it alone or with help from the Tandberg Data A/S guys in Oslo. I also ported the TDV 2243 to TDV 2400 Topaz with help from the guys in Oslo. but it did not sell well. Later on I was responsible for the Tandberg X Terminals in Sweden.
In 1990 Siemens Data AB was not interested in Tandberg products anymore. Me and two collegues met Tandberg Data A/S and proposed that we set up Tandberg Data AB in Sweden. Tandberg Data AB was started in Stockholm later that year, with a guy from Tandberg Data A/S as CEO. During this time I worked with the X terminals and also with the PC with all electronics built into the monitor but I dont remember the name of it.
I quit Tandberg Data AB in June 1994 and started working with telecommunications for Ericsson.
