The Teletype Model 33 was an electromechanical teleprinter introduced by the Teletype Corporation in May 1963. It was designed as a low-cost, light-duty terminal for the computer market and was among the first commercial devices to support the 7-bit ASCII standard.[1] Unlike earlier Teletype models that used the 5-bit Baudot code, the Model 33 utilized an ASCII character set to facilitate data communication with modern computer systems.

The terminal operates at a fixed speed of 110 baud. The printing mechanism is an impact system using a cylindrical type wheel that strikes an inked ribbon against roll paper. The standard carriage supports a line length of 72 columns.[2] The base price for the unit at launch was approximately $700. The mechanism and maintenance procedures are documented in the manufacturer's technical bulletins.[3]

The Model 33 was produced in three primary configurations: the ASR (Automatic Send-Receive), which included a paper tape reader and punch; the KSR (Keyboard Send-Receive); and the RO (Receive-Only). The unit weighs approximately 56 lbs without the stand.[3] [4][5]
