The Diablo 1355WP terminal was introduced in April, 1976 at a price of $1,500.[1] It is a daisy wheel printing terminal based on the HyType II mechanism. The 1355WP (Word Processing) model was specifically designed for OEM word processing applications, featuring a metal-clad daisy wheel for higher durability and print quality compared to plastic versions.
The unit utilizes a custom controller implemented with discrete TTL logic to manage all print, control, and status functions. This processor executes a specialized set of 16 opcodes to coordinate the high-speed movement of the carriage and print wheel.
Unlike later communication-oriented models in the 1600 series, the 1355WP does not feature a serial RS-232C or 20 mA current loop interface. Instead, it employs a 50-pin parallel interface that is electrically compatible with TTL or DTL logic levels. The terminal supports a print speed of 40 characters per second and a standard print line of 132 columns at 10 pitch. It can accommodate forms up to 15 inches wide.
Technical specifications include a column spacing of 120 positions per inch and paper feed spacing of 48 positions per inch. The metal-clad print wheels are available in 88, 92, and 96 character sets, providing an expected life of 16 million to 50 million characters.[2]
